In the Self-Determination Program, you only need to have background checks on personal care workers. But the participant can ask anyone else to get a check as well.
The FMS actually handles the whole thing. Right now during COVID, the state has waived the requirement for fingerprinting but the FMS will run a check based on their ID. The results will be sent from the CA Dept of Justice.
