Self-Advocates
Presenter Training Program

Your story can change the conversation:

• Amplify your voice
• Advocate for change
• Grow your self-confidence
• Impact your community

Are you passionate about advocating for the rights and inclusion of individuals with disabilities? Do you believe that your unique perspective and experiences can make a difference?  Disability Voices United is committed to supporting you to share your story and advocate for the services and support we all need.

Take this free training program to become a driving force for change in your community.

The Training Program

The free training consists of three virtual sessions which are accessed through Zoom. The training may also include an optional in-person training. We will work with all participants to ensure accommodations are met to access the program.

The training will help you amplify your message, advocate for change, grow your self-confidence, and impact your community.  You’ll get the tools you need to be an effective self-advocate speaker. Through presentations, guest speakers, and practice sessions, we’ll guide you to successfully communicate:

  • Who you are as the messenger
  • What your compelling message is
  • Who is your audience and how do you reach them

Your practice sessions will include your presentations of your personal advocacy story on a topic of your choice related to disability. Previous trainees have covered topics such as supported decision-making, inclusion in education, the right to communication, and access to transportation. You pick the topics you are interested in!

Eligibility

All applicants must:

  • Have a disability – all disabilities are included
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be a California resident

After the Training

Once you have completed the training program, you are eligible to apply to be a member of the Self-Advocates Speakers Bureau, and have your profile visible on our site for organizations and companies looking for qualified self-advocate speakers.

Graduates of the training program will also be invited to participate in monthly leadership trainings hosted by DVU.
