Self-Advocates
Presenter Training Program

Your story can change the conversation

Are you passionate about advocating for the rights and inclusion of individuals with disabilities? Do you believe that your unique perspective and experiences can make a difference? Disability Voices United is committed to supporting you in sharing your story and advocating for the services and support we all need.

Take advantage of this free training program to become a driving force for change in your community.

The Training Program

This free training is comprised of three virtual sessions accessible through Zoom. An optional in-person training may also be available. We will collaborate with all participants to ensure that accommodations are provided to access the program.

The training will assist you in amplifying your message, advocating for change, growing your self-confidence, and impacting your community. You will receive the tools necessary to become an effective self-advocate speaker. Through presentations, guest speakers, and practice sessions, we will guide you in effectively communicating:

  • Who you are as the messenger.
  • What your compelling message is.
  • Who your audience is and how to reach them.

Your practice sessions will involve presenting your personal advocacy story on a topic of your choice related to disability. Previous trainees have covered topics such as supported decision-making, inclusion in education, the right to communication, and access to transportation. You can choose the topics that interest you!

Eligibility

All applicants must:

  • Have a disability – all disabilities are included.
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Be a California resident.

After the Training

Upon completion of the training program, you are eligible to apply to become a member of the Self-Advocates Speakers Bureau. Your profile will be visible on our site for organizations and companies seeking qualified self-advocate speakers.

Graduates of the training program will also be invited to participate in monthly leadership trainings hosted by DVU.
